Huel is a British company that sells a range of nutritionally complete foods, including powders, ready-to-drink shakes, hot and savoury foods, and protein bars.
Huel is made from a blend of whole foods, including oats, soy protein, flaxseed, and vitamins and minerals. The products are vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO.
I have been using Huel products for several months now, and I have found them to be a convenient and healthy way to supplement my diet. I typically use the powder as a quick breakfast and the hot food for my lunch in the office.
I like the powder because it is easy to make and can be customized to my liking. I’m also a fan of the hot and savory range foods because they are quick and easy to prepare, and they do taste good.
However, I do not like the bars. I mean, I REALLY DON’T LIKE THE BARS!
I find them to be too dry and either bland or just disgusting (I’m looking at you coffee chocolate).
Overall, I think Huel can be a great option for people who are looking for a healthy and convenient way to supplement their diet.
Huel Powder
The Huel powder is a good source of protein, carbohydrates, fat, vitamins, and minerals. It is also vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO.
The powder can be made into a shake or smoothie by mixing it with water or milk. It claims it can also be added to baked goods or used to make sauces – but I haven’t tried that yet.
Of those I’ve tried so far, I would rate them as follows (out of 5 stars):
- Banana: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Vanilla: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (Winner!)
- Berry: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Original: ⭐⭐⭐
I like the Huel powder because it is easy to make, easy to drink and surprisingly filling. I occasionally on weekends add a scoop of the powder to a blender with some water, ice, and a banana.
I find that the Huel powder helps me to feel full and satisfied after drinking, much better than the ready mix bottles (see below).
Huel Ready-to-drink shakes
The Huel ready-to-drink shakes are a convenient option for people who are on the go or don’t want the mess of the powder. The shakes are available in a variety of flavors, including vanilla, chocolate, and banana. They are also vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO.
I like the Huel ready-to-drink shakes because they are quick and easy to drink, and they taste good. I do find that the shakes help me to feel full and satisfied in the morning until midday, but I wouldn’t use them as a meal substitute for lunch or my evening meal.
The main downside is the price per drink compared to the powder, which is inevitable with the pre-processed nature and cost of the bottling etc.
Huel Hot and savoury foods
The Huel hot and savory foods are a relatively new addition to the Huel lineup. The foods are available in a variety of flavors, including chili, curry, and pasta. They are also vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO.
Of those I’ve tried so far, I would rate them as follows (out of 5 stars):
- Thai Green Curry: ⭐⭐⭐
- Mac & Cheez: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
- Cajun Pasta: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (winner!)
- Korma: ⭐⭐
- Chick’n & Mushroom pasta: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I like the Huel hot and savoury foods because they are quick and easy to prepare, and they taste good.
I usually heat up a Huel hot and savory food for lunch in the office.
However, I find that the hot food alone will struggle to help me to feel full and satisfied until my next meal, so I typically add it to some toast as well.
I have started adding tinned Salmon to my Huel to bulk it up and I’d recommend trying it out for yourself.
Huel daily green powder
The latest addition to their staple, Huel’s super greens come with some huge claims about their health benefits, with “91 vitamins, minerals and wholefood-sourced ingredients”.
The taste takes a bit of getting used to, and I had to start with half the recommended amount of powder to acclimatize my taste buds to it. Their claim that – “Huel Daily Greens tastes of crisp apple and pineapple. There’s a subtle freshness from lime and mint that you’ll catch toward the end, making for a lovely and refreshing fruity greens drink with a taste that you’ll look forward to.” – is nonsense.
I am going to persist with Huel green powder and see how my relationship develops with it in the long term, but my initial impression is underwhelming.
Huel Bars
The Huel bars are available in a variety of flavors, including chocolate, peanut butter, and vanilla. They are also vegan, gluten-free, and non-GMO.
I find them to be too dry and bland. I would not recommend the bars to anyone.
Overall, I think Huel is a great option for people who are looking for a healthy and convenient way to supplement their diet.
The powder and hot and savoury foods are both good choices, but I would avoid the bars.
